T-N-R
Trap-Neuter-Return

One of the key ways a community can become No Kill is to have a T-N-R program. Instead of needlessly killing hundreds or thousands of stray or feral cats, this method provides a safe, effective and economical solution. When a cat has truly reverted to – or grown up in – an untamed state, then Trap-Neuter-Return offers a smart alternative to wholesale euthanasia.

The three-part equation is quite simple. First, feral cats are humanely and safely trapped in specially-designed cages; this is the “T” part of the program. Then, they are taken to veterinarians or clinics offering free or discounted sterilization services for T-N-R cats; this is the “N.” Finally, when they have recuperated from their surgery, these cats are returned to an established cat colony under the guidance of a registered caretaker – the “R” that finishes the name.

As healthy, well-tended groups, feral cat colonies pose no danger to area residents, family companion pets or the safety of the neighborhood. This respectful, win-win situation proves best for everyone.
